He adopts re-enactment as a working methodology, turning a sensitivity to absence/fragments into a creative engine: when confronted with indirect evidence—natural specimens, material remnants, images and archives—he deploys sensory substitution (taste/smell/sound), narrative re-composition, and contextual dislocation to forge a corporeal relation with what has disappeared. His practice is grounded in sustained observation and collecting within natural history/botany, and in research into institutional contexts, namely the “institutional residues” of protest events, attending to the ruptures and fissures that arise once objects are severed from their original historical/cultural milieus, as well as the veiled kinships of things.

Working across installation, performance, and moving image, he organizes experience through indices and para-archives, deliberately de-historicizing linear narratives to activate an open, plural, and emergent perceptual model—one in which things, once re-arranged, point toward an as-yet undefined, continually forming collective future.

Xu’s recent solo exhibitions and projects include: Fossil Feast (Imagokinetics, BY ART MATTERS, Hangzhou, 2023) ;Night Auction (Inside-Out Art Museum, Beijing, 2024);How to Bring Tomato Soup into the National Gallery(Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, Beijing, 2025). Recent group exhibitions include: 4th Nearby Images Festival (Guangzhou, 2023); Unplayable (Atmosphere Space, Nanjing, 2023); Ranran Art Season (Shanghai Xintiandi, Shanghai, 2023); Hinterland Pulse: The 4th Xinjiang International Biennale (Xinjiang Art Museum, Urumqi, 2024); West Bund Art & Design Fair Video Section (West Bund Dream Center, Shanghai, 2024); Liquid Nostalgia (CAFA Art Museum, Beijing, 2025); Open Frame (National Gallery, London, 2025); Hyperobject: Strange Visitors (Click Ten Gallery, Beijing, 2025);The Great Rupture: Apocalyptic Future Archaeology" (Central Art Museum, Hangzhou, 2025); In/Visible Spectrums: Contemporary Video Art from the Sinosphere, SOAS Gallery, London)  In 2023, Xu was shortlisted for the “Ranran Young Artist Award," jointly initiated by UCCA Center for Contemporary Art and Xintiandi.
